Two three-story buildings in Smithfield owned by the Courts Service have sat vacant for the last 27 years.

Green Party MEP Ciarán Cuffe has called the buildings "a scandalous mismanagement of a valuable State-owned resource."

If refurbished, he says, the properties could house dozens of families.

Cuffe has written to the Office of Public Works to request an overview of the vacancy level of all publicly-owned properties in Dublin.

“I was aware these buildings had been vacant for several years, but I did not know they had been empty since the last century," he said.

"Leaving state buildings empty since 1995 is at best regrettable."

The Courts Service has since confirmed that no further buildings that it owns in Dublin are in a similar situation.

The information came in reply to a parliamentary question tabled by Green Party TD Neasa Hourigan.
