A group of city councillors are meeting later to discuss the new flood defence proposal for Clontarf.

The plan will be more aesthetically pleasing than the last one which was vetoed over 2 years ago following objections by residents.

These new proposals will be less of an eyesore on the promenade but will provide much needed protection for residents and businesses in Clontarf.

The current seawall will stay the same except for a new 1.1 metre section being built at the Alfie Byrne Road.

A second wall will be built as close to the Clontarf roadway as possible with flood gates added.

Councillors from the area will discuss the plans later

Councillor Jane Horgan-Jones says these new proposals are much better than the previous one.

"The process has been running since the council vetoed the managers last plan has involved residents, has involved local businesses and hopefully it will result in the whole community supporting the final plan."

However, she said it could be some time before the full council get to discuss them.

"The council plans to engage consultants to test how viable this scheme is. It has to stack up, I suppose, economically and there has to be preliminary designs done to see if this will actually work in practice."

Temporary flood defences had been in place in Clontarf during the recent storms including large sandbags at the park near the Alfie Byrne Road.
