Plans to redevelop Dublin's Fruit and Vegetable Market as a continental style food market are to be lodged by the city council within weeks.

Dublin City Council has been renovating the historic market hall between Capel Street and the Four Courts since 2012.

Now the council is set to seek planning permission to redevelop the 6000 square meter area.

Part of the plan will see wholesalers move to the western half of the building, while the remaining half of the hall will be devoted to a retail food market, including butchers, bakers, cheese and fishmongers, and greengrocers.

A combination of indoor and outdoor permanent and temporary stalls will be available to traders from September next year once the 3 million euro project is given the green light.

It's thought planning permission could be approved by June with construction starting in September.
