Preliminary works to create a new Dublin suburb have been approved by the city council.
Poolbeg West has the potential to deliver 3,500 homes, with a quarter earmarked for social and affordable housing.
It is situated on the peninsula that extends into Dublin Bay just south of the mouth of the River Liffey, and is only 2 km east of O’Connell Bridge.
Dublin city council has granted planning permission for preliminary infrastructural works to allow for the first phase of the project.
According to the Herald, it includes developing streets, public spaces and transportation and water services for the 15 hectare site.
A new network of roads includes a tree-lined avenue called Central Boulevard. A new coastal park also forms part of the plans, along with a large village green, public square and a dog park.
The preliminary works also include the temporary landscaping of a site for a new school.
The plan will see the old Glass Bottle site and adjoining land in Ringsend redeveloped, allowing thousands of homes to be built.
