Cabinet is expected to approve the construction of a new National Maternity Hospital this morning.

However, some Government TDs are asking Ministers to delay the decision while further concerns are ironed out.

Two weeks ago Cabinet delayed a decision on the project at Elm Park in south Dublin but is expected to press ahead today.

Ministers like Catherine Martin, who had concerns, say they are happy the safeguards in place will mean no religious influence on the care provided at the hospital.

The Taoiseach has said all legal maternity services will be available.

The phrasing in the deal shall remain that legal and 'clinically appropriate' services will be provided at the hospital. Some campaigners are concerned about what that phrasing could mean for healthcare down the line without a clear definition.

Not all Government TDs are convinced.

Yesterday evening Green Party TD Neasa Hourigan asked for the decision to be delayed, saying trust in the project doesn't exist.
