Dubliners may be called on to a pay a congestion charge for driving into the city in a bid to tackle peak traffic problems.

The National Transport Authority says unless the proposed charge is introduced before 2020 the Government will be unable to meet its target of reducing car commuting levels to 45 percent of all journeys.

London currently imposes a 12 euro daily charge within designated zones at particular times which has proven to have worked in reducing their traffic volumes.

An NTA spokeswoman says that traffic is chronic in Dublin with the AA's Conor Faughnan adding that we have the worst rates of public transport provision in Europe leaving people dependant on their cars.

Two years ago Transport Minister Leo Varadkar rejected the initial proposal of charging motorists to bring their cars into cities and last night said his position has not changed on the matter.
