A Dublin city councillor has described plans for a national memorial at a former Magdalene laundry as disgusting, saying it should be demolished.
Mannix Flynn stormed out of a council meeting last night following an angry outburst in the chamber.
The former industrial school resident and abuse survivor said it was shameful his fellow councillors supported the transfer of the Sean McDermott Street laundry to the OPW, which was approved by councillors yesterday.
The site in the north inner city is to be turned into a memorial to honour former residents of mother and baby homes, industrial schools, reformatories, and laundries.
Councillor Flynn compared the building to British serial killer Fred West’s house;
"I am in totally in favour of demolishing the whole entire site in it's entirety. I mean would you keep Fred West's house, would you keep Rosemary West's house - no you wouldn't. So why would you want to keep a disgusting piece of muck where there was wholesale horror took place in Seán McDermott Street."
The National Centre for Research and Remembrance will include;
a) a museum and exhibition space
b) a research centre and repository of records related to institutional trauma in the 20th century
c) a place for reflection and remembrance
The site will also have social housing and local community facilities and an educational and early learning facility.
