It's been confirmed that a food market will be included in the new Clerys Quarter.

The former home of one of Dublin’s most iconic department stores is going to be turned into a mixed-use development.

Clerys Quarter will include a new hotel, as well as office and retail space.

The building's new owners say Clerys Quarter will combine both "traditional elements and modern concepts" that will "regenerate Dublin’s landmark street".

Sympathetic Transformation

The listed Clerys Building will be transformed into a "world class retail, office and leisure destination".

The iconic Clerys’ clock will be carefully restored, as will the internal staircases, columns and ceilings.

Clerys’ original restaurant and bar, The Tea Rooms will also be fully refurbished.

The new owners expect construction works to start in the first quarter of this year, once a contractor is confirmed.

More than 750 jobs are expected to be created during construction, while 400 permanent jobs should be on offer once it opens in late 2020.

New Hotel

A new 176-bedroom four-star hotel will be developed towards the back of the building.

It will stand close to another hotel, which will "anchor" the new Earl Place Market.

It's being described as a "street level destination for hospitality, food and beverage".

Those behind Clerys Quarter say it will showcase "some of the best independent restaurants, cafes and bars in the city".

Reaction

Dublin Chamber has described the plans as "hugely exciting".

CEO Mary Rose Burke said O'Connell Street is "crying out" for the development.

Alongside planned works on the Carlton Cinema site", she described it as "a new golden age for O'Connell Street".
