Dublin city councillors have voted to restrict build-to-rent schemes, defying an order from the planning regulator.
Public reps agreed to limit the number of rental-only units to a maximum of 40 per cent of any new development as part of the council's draft development plan, which will run until 2028.
Originally the proposal was to have at least 40 per cent of complexes meeting the requirements of standard build-to-sell apartments. Build-to-rent units don't have to comply with minimum size standards.
Councillors then decided to increase that to 60 per cent of developments.
It comes as the Office of the Planning Regulator warned DCC earlier this year that the plans went against national policy.
Independent councillor Nial Ring (PRON: Neil) says it will help limit the number of controversial BTR schemes being built in the city;
"We don't want any substandard, they call it flexible standards, it's substandard, it's inferior, it's going back to I don't know back to Tenement buildings almost and I really object to build-to-rent."
