The head of the Criminal Assets Bureau says there's no evidence to suggest that plain cigarette packaging will lead to a boom in the illegal tobacco trade.
The comments came at the Oireachtas Health Committee's first hearing into plans for standard packs with graphic health warnings.
The Revenue Commissioners says it believes the security features on the plain packets will stop smugglers.
