The Culture Minister says she is looking at changing late venue closing times and introducing Night Mayors.

There is pressure to promote the benefits of the night-time economy, following the closure of a string of well known venues in Dublin.

Since the start of this year, venues including Lillie's, The Tivoli and The Wright Venue have closed their doors.

While Lille's and The Wright Venue have been re-imaged as alternative venues, The Tiovli is being turned into a hotel.

Andrew's Lane Theatre, which shut in 2018, has also been flattened to make room for a hotel.

The closures have left little or no dedicated nightclub spaces left in Dublin.

A campaign group called Give Us The Night is lobbying politicians to change licensing laws.

It wants closing times to be staggered, so that all pubs and clubs don't shut at the same time.

Spokesperson Sunil Sharpe wants to see a distinction made between late bars and nightclubs.

He believes some clubs have closed because crowds didn't move on from pubs:

"They couldn't keep up with the pressure that was put on them by everybody going to a bar first, and staying there".

The Culture Minister has admitted she is open to reviewing licencing times.

Staggering closing hours is "something we are looking at", she said.

Josepha Madigan has also indicated that Dublin, and other large cities, could get Night Mayors.

Their job would be to promote the benefits of the night-time economy.

However, Minister Madigan said the suggestions need to be worked on "collaboratively".

She is also examining the high cost of running a venue space in Dublin.
