Dublin city council has been called on to protect communities from the dangerous effects of misinformation around immigration.

It follows a special meeting last night involving public reps and council officials on the issue and the impact it has on public safety that was called for by councillor Barry Heneghan.

It was confirmed at least one councillor is under investigation for alleged breaches of the local government code of ethics.

Sinn Féin councillor Janice Boylan says they need to be given the correct information from government bodies to stop the spread of misinformation;

"Social media is a tool that we all use but we need to use it in a responsible way, it shouldn't be used to make matters worse or to stir up false information and too many times we've seen that happen by elected people to this chamber."

People Before Profit councillor Conor Reddy says racism is dividing people;

"Just yesterday in Finglas again we seen and heard of a shocking incident where a child was racially abused by another group of children in a playground, she's know terrified to return to that playground.

These are the real consequences of the spread of misinformation and hatred by people in this chamber and by people out on the streets as well."
