A Dublin TD has called for the Garda Commissioner to deploy armed Gardaí and visible checkpoints in Finglas to tackle the escalating feud between drug gangs.
The murder of a 29-year-old man in the area last weekend is being linked with the ongoing feud. James Whelan was found shot dead on Deanstown Avenue in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
Fianna Fáil's Paul McAuliffe says CAB have a role to play in seizing assets and that targeted community interventions are needed to protect young people from being caught up in the violence.
The former Lord Mayor of Dublin told the Dáil earlier this week that a family home was turned into a headquarters for a drug cartel;
"We've had homes that have been petrol bombed or engaged in arson attacks, we've had a kidnapping, we've had social media platforms that are being used to issue threats by rival gangs and we had one family home where the people were intimidated so that the home could be turned into a HQ for a drug cartel."
He said the property was retrofitted with bulletproof glass and CCTV.
"I am calling on the Garda Commissioner to meet with local public and community representatives to discuss his plans to tackle this situation and direct more Garda resources to the area. Unfortunately, we have all seen this feud escalate over the last few weeks and local people need to know that Gardaí are going to tackle those responsible and defuse the violence" he said.
