There are calls for a dedicated animal crime unit within the gardai after three horses died in separate incidents in the city this week.
The animal charity My Lovely Horse say three upsetting cases have been reported to them in the past few days.
A horse attached to a carriage passed away in Smithfield on Monday while a loose horse hit a number of cars in Cabra.
In a third incident yesterday, three young people were seen running from the scene after a sulky and pony hit a parked car in Cloverhill.
Martina Kenny from My Lovely Horse charity says this case was particularly upsetting. She said:
''They literally ran into the back of the car. The poor horse collapsed and died instantly. One of our volunteers was there immediately and the horse was still warm. They had literally left bits of the sulky wrapped around him. They were seen running with bits and pieces of the sulky between them. No compassion whatsoever for the horse.''
It comes as a protest against animal cruelty takes place outside the Dail this lunchtime involving a number of animal charities.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 3 May one of our co-founders, Martina, along with other animal advocates will present on animal concerns in Dáil Éireann.
Please join them afterwards to peacefully protest outside Dáil Éireann at 2.30pm.
