People don't feel as safe as they should in Dublin.

That's the view of a city centre business group, following a report which suggested there was a 'deterioration of security' around O'Connell Street.

The remarks were made in a planning application for An Post, which wants to hang two marketing banners at the GPO.

46 thousand people visited the 1916 exhibit last year, down from over 160 thousand in 2016.

Dublin Town says It would be 'simplistic' to say crime would be a factor in reduced footfall around O'Connell Street.

CEO Richard Guiney says the city, while it does have some issues, isn't as bad as other European cities:

"They have far more serious crime, gun crime, knife crime, you know things that we don't have that much of in Dublin".

He thinks lighting on O'Connell Street could be improved also.
