The National Transport Authority's mammoth public consultation on the BusConnects plan has hit a speed bump on Griffith Avenue on the Northside.

Officials had planned to bring in a small number of local community representatives for a briefing with engineers.

But the Griffith Avenue and District Residents Association said it would call in up to 4,000 residents by text -- prompting planners to propose hiring security guards, according to reports in the Times Ireland Edition.

Residents said they felt insulted -- and the meeting was eventually cancelled.

The NTA's Dermot O'Gara said it just wasn't practical to have so many people turn up.

"A particular residents association felt that they needed to invite all of their members -- and they say they have 4,000 members -- they wanted all of their members invited to this particular event," he said.

"We simply are not geared up to deal with that level of attendance for a meeting that's typically supposed to involve a few dozen people, you know, one or two representatives from the different community groups along the route."

Meanwhile, business owners and residents are holding a gathering today in Stoneybatter demanding changes to the Busconnects plan.

The National Transport Authority is aiming to create 230 kilometres of bus lanes and cycleways along 16 bus corridors to build a city-wide high-frequency bus network.

But local Stoneybatter business owner, Seaneen Sullivan, claims the plan is not user friendly for cyclists and pedestrians.
