The Social protection Minister says if the Government hands out a higher rate of Rent Allowance, it’ll push up rent prices for everyone else.
Joan Burton’s warning follows a study which claims people in Dublin are buying houses rather than apartments.
Focus Ireland said the Government’s new social housing rental agency for Dublin won’t unless rent caps are increased.
Social protection Minister Joan Burton says it’s something her department are looking at.
She says their concern is if they put up the cap, rents will go up again.
“If we push up rents without due consideration, we will end up in a situation where people at work who are paying the rent in private rental accommodation, their rent will go up automatically to match whatever increases we grant.”
Meanwhile, a new survey by AIB says Dubliners are looking to buy houses rather than apartments.
They say some are willing to spend as much as 350 thousand Euro in getting the home that they want.
