Property developers are looking to build an 4,000 apartments in Dublin under new fast-track planning rules.
It's an unprecedented amount under the strategic housing development system, according to a report in the Sunday Times Ireland.
Builders can go straight to An Bord Pleanála to seek planning permission for large-scale projects using the strategic Housing development system
Among the projects are almost 700 units near Connolly Rail Station, 580 in the north Docks, and almost 500 on the site of the old Chivers (pron: chivvers) factory in Coolock.
The news comes as the Lord Mayor of Dublin says the city's skyline may need to change to ease the current housing crisis.
Councillor Ring says if more height is needed - then so be it.
"I'm not a great man for the height myself -- I like Dublin as it is," he said.
"But I'm practical enough to know that at this stage we have to go upward, because we can't continue to go outward."
