The brother of a young man who died while taking part in the social media craze "neknomination" is warning others to stop the drinking game before more lives are lost.

19 year old Jonny Byrne, from Leighlinbridge in Carlow, jumped into the river Barrow yesterday evening whilst taking part in the drinking game and drowned.

His body was recovered this morning at Millford Lough.

His brother has asked people not to play "Nek Nomination". The social media based drinking game sees participants film themselves downing a pint, uploading the clip online and then nominating a friend to do the same.

The man who died in Carlow last night had been filming his Neknomination video near Milford Lough when he got into difficulty.

His brother wants other to learn from the dangers of playing the drinking game.

He posted on Facebook last night:

"My young 19 year old brother Johnny Byrne died tonight in the middle of his nomination... he thought he had to try and beat the competition, after he necked his pint, he jumped into the river. If people have any decency and respect they will refrain from anymore of this stupid nek nomination"

The Gardai, coastguard, members of the Civil Defence, and dozens of volunteers were also taking part in the search at Millford Bridge, the mans body was recovered at around ten to ten this morning.

A full post mortem will be carried out at Waterford Regional Hospital later today.
