A long awaited plan to create a six kilometre greenway across the Malahide Estuary has moved a step closer to reality.
Fingal County Council has applied for planning permission to develop a walk and cycle route, known as Broadmeadow Way.
It would be six kilometres long, and run between Malahide Demesne and Newbridge Demesne in Donabate.
The proposed development will run across the Malahide Estuary, alongside the mainline railway viaduct.
Broadmeadow Way
The Mayor of Fingal, Anthony Lavin, believes the link would attract walkers and cyclists from all over Dublin.
He said it would provide "an iconic route for walkers and cyclists of all abilities and ages to enjoy this stunning coastal route".
Broadmeadow Way would eventually form part of a larger greenway, connecting areas including Donabate, Rush and Skerries.
The proposed Fingal Coastal Way would also take in sites including Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan and Bremore Castle.
Senior Engineer Paul Carroll said Broadmeadow Way "will deliver a great facility for walkers, cyclists and nature enthusiasts".
He said it will "showcase the stunning natural scenery of the north County Dublin coastline".
