Boost To Public Order Unit After Dublin Riots

The number of gardaí in Dublin with public order training has more than tripled since the riots in the city.

Government ministers will hear today about updates to policing since the violence broke out on November 23rd 2023.

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan will brief cabinet on the review carried out by the Policing Authority in the wake of the riots on O'Connell Street.

It covered areas including training, resourcing and equipment after dozens of gardaí were injured as shops were looted and buses, trams and patrol cars were set on fire.

Ministers will hear how the Garda public order unit now has 1,500 personnel. In Dublin, the numbers have increased from 200 on the day of the riots, to 700.

While two water cannons have been brought in, along with an extra 15 public order vans.
