Brian O'Driscoll is to be awarded the Freedom of Dublin.

The Lord Mayor will host the ceremony at the Mansion House this Saturday afternoon.

The decision to award Brian was made last November, long before he helped Ireland win the Six Nations in Paris.

Father Peter McVerry, who spent most of his life working with the homeless, will also get the freedom of the city this weekend.

Only 76 people have been given the Freedom of Dublin, including Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Bono.

The accolade means holders have the right to bring goods into Dublin, without paying customs duties, and graze sheep in areas like College Green and St. Stephen's Green.

However, Freeman and woman must also be ready to defend the city from attack, and at short notice can be called up to join a city militia.

A law passed in 1454 also requires holders to own a bow, coat of mail and a helmet and sword.

Although he's well used to winning battles, luckily for BOD, none of the requirements have ever been put into action.
