Almost half of requested taxi trips hailed online in Dublin can go unfulfilled at peak times.
Research compiled by taxi app Bolt shows that between Friday midday and Sunday morning 43 per cent of requested journeys by customers are not being picked up.
Even on the least busy weekday periods there was a 16 per cent shortfall.
In Cork the problem is even more pronounced at 56 per cent of cab requests going unfulfilled.
The report found up to 2,150 jobs could be created in Dublin over the long-term, adding up to €58 million euro to the local economy, if regulations were changed.
Bolt says rules around taxis being wheelchair accessible could be eased and that the driver entry test could be changed to improve pass rates.
It comes as the Taxis for Ireland Coalition will highlight its concerns over cab shortages with politicians in Leinster House today.
