An air taxi service could be introduced in Ireland in just three years.

The people behind Future Mobility Campus Ireland say the drones, known as urban air taxis, will be able to carry four passengers at a time.

The plans will be unveiled at a conference in Dublin next month, with the company predicting the aircraft could begin operating in 2027.

The first flights are expected to be tested at the organisation's centre in Clare.

CEO of FMCI, Russell Vickers, says the team is making good progress.

"We expect the initial flights will be centred around our test area here in Shannon Co. Clare with aircraft capable of carrying up to four passengers at a time. It’s an incredibly exciting, collaborative effort involving ourselves, Shannon Airport Group and other key partners".

The aircraft are already being tested in a number of cities internationally, with one service potentially in place for the Olympics this summer in Paris.
