A Dublin Businessman Dies After Trying To Stop His Car From Being Stolen

Gardai in Dublin are investigating the death of a 50-year-old businessman, who was struck by a stolen car last weekend.

Ian McDonnell was knocked down after trying to stop his car being stolen on the Robinhood Road in Clondalkin on Sunday evening.

At about 6.15 on Sunday evening, Ian McDonnell was at his business on the Robinhood road in Clondalkin.

Ian noticed his car, a grey coloured Volkswagen Passat, was being stolen and he attempted to intervene.

However he was struck by the car, and carried on the bonnet for a distance before hitting the ground.

He was taken to Tallaght University Hospital in a serious condition, but passed away yesterday.

Gardai say the Volkswagen Passat has since been recovered and forensic examinations are ongoing.

They're appealing for anyone with information on another vehicle too, a silver Toyota Aura that was stolen on Sunday in Crumlin and was since burned out in Tallaght.

Gardaí in Clondalkin are seeking the public’s assistance for the following information:

Gardaí are anxious to hear from anyone who may have been in the Robinhood Road area of Clondalkin on the evening of Sunday 23rd January.

Particularly between 5.30pm and 7pm, who may have witnessed any activity which drew their attention or who may have any video or dash cam footage.

The grey coloured Volkswagen Passat (161 OY 1861) which was stolen has been recovered.

It was found on Limekiln Green in Greenhills, on Friday.

"Where was that vehicle between Sunday 23rd January and Friday 28th January, 2022?" A spokeperson said.

The silver coloured Toyota Aqua was stolen in Crumlin on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd January, was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday.

"Where was that vehicle between Sunday 23rd January and Tuesday 25th January, 2022?"

Investigating Gardaí are looking for any information on where either car was parked up at any location, or was either vehicle seen in any petrol station or at any other location over those days?

Investigating Gardaí are also seeking assistance from anyone who may have seen either of the cars in the vicinity of Ballymount, Walkinstown, Tallaght, Kylemore Road, or Ballyfermot between 6.30pm and 9pm on Sunday night 23rd January, 2022.
