64% of renters in the Greater Dublin Area are spending more than half of their take home pay on rent.

New figures from the Residential Tenancies Board found the average tenant nationally spends 36 percent of their monthly income on rent.

The research found smaller landlords, with one or two properties, are looking to exit the rental market.

It's expected rents will increase as more pressure is put on supply.

The study also found Dublin tenants are faced with higher deposits for their accommodation.

The average renter paid €1,450 deposit in the capital while the average outside of Dublin was €800.

Most people, 79%, said they've a positive experience of renting and over a third expect to still be renting in a ten years time.

When asked their reason for renting, proximity to work, education and not knowing where they want to live long term were among the main answers given.
