Eir is installing 22 phoneboxes across the city, to replace old ones.
They'll be called "Digital Pedestals" and will also have a touch screen to show maps or adverts.
The company has set a target of 180 devices in place nationwide.
A spokesperson for eir says: "eir is working with county councils to agree best use of legacy infrastructure. As agreed with Dublin City Council, 22 new Digital Pedestals will be installed in Dublin City in the coming days, with a touch sensitive screen suitable for displaying maps and for DCC to advertise upcoming events and services.
"eir is also rolling out another option, to replace payphone kiosks with Electrical Vehicle (EV) Chargers, at no cost to the council. eir announced this plan in December and have targeted initially 180 telephone kiosks nationwide."
Green Party councillor Janet Horner believes they will 'clutter' the city:
Eir are installing 22 of these new phone boxes in the city in the coming days..
Which, IMHO, seems a pretty daft idea.
They offer v limited utility, clutter the streets and will now include a touch info screen (cos touching phone boxes MORE was a thing we all wanted?!)
