Irish Water says it will invest almost 1.8 billion euro between now and 2016 in improving the country's water infrastructure.
The State company has identified key problems including the elimination of boil notices, providing a secure supply to Dublin, and fixing the leaks that mean more than 40 per cent of our water is lost through damaged pipes.
However, Irish Water says it still needs to raise more than 500 million Euro in additional funding to carry out the plan.
It says it will explore all options to bridge the gap in funding.
