Thirteen per cent of Irish women suffer with postnatal depression.

Counseling charity "Nurture" says 42,000 mothers are diagnosed each year with mental illness and emotional trauma surrounding pregnancy and childbirth.

The group is holding an "Emotional Wellbeing Education Conference" in Dublin today, to raise awareness of these issues.

Dr Patricia Leahy Warren is a senior lecturer at The School of Nursing and Midwifery at UCC.
