New Speed Limits and Car Restrictions Come Into Force At Phoenix Park

A new 30 kilometre an hour speed limit comes into force in the Phoenix Park in Dublin from today.

There will also be restrictions on car access to the park, as announced earlier this month.

They're in line with the recommendations of the Phoenix Park Transport and Mobility Operations Report.

In addition to the new speed limits, a one-way system has been implemented on the North Road.

Cars will also be banned altogether from using the park's main southern Road.

Meanwhile, temporary cycle lanes which replaced parking on Chesterfield Avenue will become permanent.

"The park should be accessible to everyone by every means of transport, but it's a bit too car-dominated," says Green Party Councillor Michael Pidgeon.

"Hopefully this will slow down the traffic a little bit [and] make it easier for people to enjoy the park once they get there.

"We've had reports and consultations and these are some of the first steps in making the park quieter and calmer."

A high visibility Garda presence will be in force to patrol the new measures.

The OPW says it is also advancing its Parking Strategy, as contained in the report.

It says the strategy will aim to address parking issues and visitor requirements, especially those with mobility needs.
