The National Women’s Council held a rally outside the Dail today to call for political leadership and action on women's equality.

Violence against women, outdated gender roles, childcare costs and the housing crisis were among the issues on the agenda.

The NWC said they continue to "battle the interference of the Catholic Church in our reproductive healthcare and the future of our new national maternity hospital."

A moment of silence was held in solidarity with the women and people of Ukraine and Ukrainians in Ireland.

Representatives from a wide range of organizations were in attendance, with members of Women's Aid, ROSA and SIPTU speaking at the event.

Government TDs Excluded

The NWC decided not to invite any TDs from the government to attend the rally, causing controversy.

Fine Gael MEP Frances Fitzgerald, who served as Chair of the NWC for four years in the 1980s, says the exclusion was "regrettable."

A number of female opposition politicians, including Mary Lou McDonald, Roisin Shortall and Brid Smith, spoke at the event.

Fitzgerald said the decision was a strategic blunder, but that both the organization and the government should put their disagreements behind them.

International Women's Day takes place on Tuesday.
