One of Dublin's most popular taxi apps is introducing a cab sharing service to the city.
MyTaxi will trial a feature called MyTaxi Match in the next few months.
The firm, which is changing its name to Free Now, hopes the option will lower fares and cut carbon emissions.
The feature will allow passengers travelling in the same direction the option to pair up and "more efficiently utilise taxi capacity".
The pilot will initially run in the Grand Canal Dock and Sandyford Industrial Estate areas.
It will then roll out across more areas of Dublin.
MyTaxi Cab Sharing Trial
The trial is part of a wider initiative with Dublin's four local authorities, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
The Smart Dublin scheme is also working to reduce traffic congestion and provide alternative transport options.
Alan Fox, General Manager for mytaxi Ireland admitted taxis "usually do not travel to full capacity".
He hopes the new service will "better use mytaxi's fleet" and "offer passengers a cheaper, more environmentally-friendly" service.
As part of this trial, mytaxi will geo-fence the locations in the app where passengers can use 'match'.
Passengers will be notified of 'match' availability when inside the virtual fence.
The taxi-sharing option will be available 24/7, and fares will be calculated transparently on the app.
Despite sharing a cab, MyTaxi says all passenger information will be secure and the technology meets GDRP requirements.
The company says it will use data from the trial to decide if there is enough demand to make the trial permanent.
