If you’re hoping Coldplay will keep releasing new music for years to come, Chris Martin has some bad news for you.
The frontman confirmed that after they release their 10th studio album Moon Music this Friday, they’re only going to release two more after that. And that will be IT.
He revealed the reason behind this in an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums, and that’s real,” the singer told Zane Lowe.
When Zane responded to this with disappointment, saying Coldplay should release “50 albums”, Chris replied: “You don’t, because less is more. And for some of our critics, even less would be even more.”
“It’s really important that we have that limit,” he added.
He revealed that this decision is heavily influenced by their musical inspirations, and how much they put into the world of music.
“There’s only 12 and a half Beatles albums. There’s about the same Bob Marley, so all of our heroes,” he said. “And also having that limit means that the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great.”
But just because Coldplay will stop making new music after their 12th album, doesn’t mean Chris Martin himself is going to slow down.
“That will always continue in some way, but there’s something about the Coldplay thing,” Chris said.
“I don’t know where the songs come from. I don’t know where the ideas come from, but that’s just been coming to me for about four or five years now. Like, ‘You have to finish like this,’ and I trust that just like I trust the songs.”
It's certainly not goodbye by the sounds of it so no need to panic yet!
