The competition is fierce!
Fairytale of New York could have their chances of reaching Number 1 in the UK charts this Christmas rattled by another festive classic.
In the wake of Shane MacGowan’s death, his widow Victoria Mary Clarke expressed her hope that the Pogue’s best known song 'Fairytale of New York' would finally get the coveted top spot in the UK charts on Christmas Day.
The classic 1987 hit has reached Number 1 in the Irish charts, but never managed to claim the top spot in the UK.
In the year it was released, it was pipped to the post by Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Always On My Mind’.
Now what’s standing in the way of reaching that goal this year is Wham!’s popular tune ‘Last Christmas’ fiercely climbing the charts as well.
There’s also a chance it won’t make No.1 in Ireland either as 'Stick Season' by Noah Kahan regained the top spot last week.
We’re a week out now so it’s going to be a tense race to the finish! Who’s going to come out on top?
