Ridley Scott has revealed why he didn’t give Russell Crowe a call when he was making Gladiator 2.
The original film, also directed by Ridley Scott, was a breakout role for Russell Crowe, taking the world by storm as the iconic Maximus Decimus Meridius.
Now 24 years later, our own Paul Mescal is taking the starring role in the sequel. He’s playing Lucius, the son of Lucilla, who follows Maximus' footsteps as he becomes a gladiator and tries to save Rome from its corrupt leaders.
In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Ridley Scott candidly revealed why he didn’t consult with Russell Crowe on the script for the blockbuster’s follow-up.
"The plot, frankly, was right under our noses. I think it was so close under our noses that we thought it was too simple. I think he's still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do. As long as he doesn't start bitching about how he wasn't consulted. Why would I? He's dead!"
Russell Crowe has been asked what he thinks about the upcoming sequel in recent interviews and he has admitted he feels “uncomfortable” with the idea of it.
“A couple of the things I’ve heard I’m like, ‘No, no, no, that’s not in the moral journey of that particular character’. But I can’t say anything, it’s not my place, I’m six foot under. So we’ll see what that is like,” the 60 year old actor said on the podcast Kyle Meredith With…
