Justice League is released in Irish cinemas today. DC’s Iconic Heroes assemble for the first time on the big screen in the Superhero event of the year. 

The film stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. 

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.  Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat.  But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

BATMAN / BRUCE WAYNE

Inspired by Superman’s sacrifice, the billionaire detective is putting together a team of Super Heroes to combat a force threatening the entire planet.For the first time, Batman understands that he, alone, cannot save the world.

  • Created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, Batman first appeared in the May 1939 issue of Detective Comics #27, before stepping off the page to become a cultural touchstone across the globe.
  • The tragic origins of Bruce Wayne’s one-man war on crime were later revealed on the pages of Detective Comics #33(November 1939).
  • Batman’s abilities include:
    • Mastery of the martial arts
    • Extreme strength and endurance
    • High-tech suit, gadgetry
    • Brilliant deductive mind
    • Vast personal resources
  • Justice League marks the 3rd film in which acclaimed actor and Oscar-winning filmmaker Ben Affleck (Argo) has taken on the iconic Dark Knight, having first embodied Batman / Bruce Wayne in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and again that same year in a brief but high-impact cameo in Suicide Squad.

WONDER WOMAN / DIANA PRINCE

The world’s first and foremost female Super Hero, Wonder Woman embodies the unrivaled force and grace of a born warrior with the genuine compassion of a true humanitarian.  The first to join Bruce Wayne’s team, Diana’s natural confidence and unmistakable intelligence make her an indispensable ally.

  • Wonder Woman wascreated by William Moulton Marston – under the pen name Charles Moulton and with the encouragement of his wife, Elizabeth Holloway Marston – and drawn by Harry G. Peter.
  • Since her October 1941debut on the pages of All-Star Comics Volume 1, #8, Wonder Woman has been embraced by generations of fans as a global symbol of peace, justice and empowerment.
  • The groundbreaking Super Hero’s own comic book series was launched in 1942 with Wonder Woman #1, andhas not been out of print in the seven decades since.
  • Wonder Woman’s powers include:
    • Superhuman strength, agility and speed
    • Near invulnerability
    • Mastery in all forms of combat

AQUAMAN / ARTHUR CURRY

Half-human, half-Atlantean, Arthur Curry is an outsider who does not feel at home on the Earth’s surface or under the sea.  That is, until the world is threatened and he joins Batman’s newly assembled team of heroes.

  • Aquaman was created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger, and first splashed into action on the pages of More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941).
  • Aquaman’s mystical weapon of choice is a gleaming, powerful Trident.
  • Aquaman’spowers include:
    • Enhanced strength
    • Exceptional swimming speeds
    • Ability to breathe underwater
    • An intuitive understanding of the ocean and its mysteries.

THE FLASH / BARRY ALLEN

Barry Allen is an excessively energetic student attending Central City College, where he studies criminal justice with the hope of one day freeing his incarcerated father.  More than eager to team up with crime fighting icon Batman, Barry’s remarkably quick wit is surpassed only by his ability to move at hyper-speed.

  • Barry Allen first appeared as The Flash in Showcase #4 (October 1956), created by Robert Kanigher and drawn by Carmine Infantino.
  • Barry is among a handful of DC characters who have appeared under The Flash mantle, dating back to the 1940 debut of the “Scarlet Speedster” in Flash Comics #1, created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert.
  • The Flash’s physics-defying powers include:
    • The fastest man alive
    • Superhuman reflexes and agility
    • Accelerated healing

CYBORG / VICTOR STONE

Part man, part machine, Victor Stone is a former star athlete at Gotham City University.  After a horrificaccident nearly cost him his life, he was saved when his father, scientist Silas Stone, used alien technology to reconstruct his body.  In the process, Silas turned Victor into a human computer, organic with biomechatronic body parts.  In other words, a Cyborg.

  • Cyborg was created in 1980 by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez, and first appeared in a special insert in DC Comics Presents #26, introducingthe popular Teen Titans Super Hero team.
  • A fan-favorite in the Teen Titans comics and animated series (voiced by Khary Payton), Cyborg was reimagined in the August 2011 issue of Justice League #1, as part of DC’s The New 52 relaunch.
  • Cyborg’s powers include:
    • Super strength
    • Instant weaponry and tech
    • Genius-level intellect
    • Ability to communicate with and control technology
