Irish Rap Trio Kneecap Could Be Heading Off To The Oscars

Could the Irish be taking over the Oscars... again?

The Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) has announced that Kneecap has been selected to represent Ireland in the Oscar International Feature Film category at the upcoming 97th annual Academy Awards.

Mo Chara, one of the three members of the band reacted to the news and said: "For a culture that was so brutally oppressed for so long, the language was almost driven to extinction, now it’s on the biggest stage of the world and it’s an absolute privilege."

 

If you're not familiar with Kneecap they're an Irish rap trio from Belfast that consist of, Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí who rap in Irish.

The lads film, Kneecap is an origin story of how the band formed and highlights their life growing up in Belfast.

The synopsis reads: "Set in West Belfast in 2019, when fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of Naoise and Liam Óg, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other."

"Rapping in their native Irish language, the trio create their own genre of Irish punk rap, melding the Irish and English language with electrifying energy."

The film has been described as ballsy, brave and one of the best music biopics ever made!

Kneecap drops to Irish cinemas from the the 8th of August.
