Gladiator II is off to an impressive start as it sets a new record in its opening weekend at the box office.

The highly awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic opened number one at the global box office this weekend, according to Comscore’s senior media analyst.

Grossing $87 million worldwide, Gladiator II has become Paramount Pictures biggest international opening for an R-Rating movie, as well as the biggest international opening for a Ridley Scott movie.

The movie itself has been garnering mostly positive reviews, and currently sits at a 75% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Guardian awarded the film 3 stars, praising the combat scenes for being “superbly choreographed” and “formidably executed” while IGN’s review says Paul Mescal “shoulders the weight of that brewing revolution well” in the role of Lucius.
