Delighted for Cillian!
The 81st Golden Globes took place in Los Angeles last night and our own Cillian Murphy took home the award for Best Male Actor for his role in Oppenheimer.
It was the same category his fellow Irishmen Barry Keoghan and Andrew Scott were nominated in, for their roles in Saltburn and All Of Us Strangers respectively.
In his acceptance speech, Cillian Murphy gave a nod to the fact that half the nominees were Irish.
“To all my fellow nominees, if you’re Irish or not, you’re all legends.”

Oppenheimer was the movie winner from the night, taking home 5 awards where its pink blockbuster rival Barbie took home only 2.
The shock of the night was Barbie losing to Poor Things for the award of Best Comedy Or Musical.
Poor Things, a fantasy black comedy starring Emma Stone, was part-produced by Irish production company Element Pictures.
Emma Stone also beat out Margot Robbie to win Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
On the television side of things then it’s no surprise that Succession was the star of the night, scooping up 4 awards.
Kieran Culkin took home the award for Best Male Actor in a Drama Series where his onscreen sister Sarah Snook won the award for Best Female Actor.

Another big winner was The Bear, taking home 4 wins including Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White. It was rivalled by Netflix series Beef which also claimed 4 Golden Globes last night, but The Bear won out in the overall category of Best Comedy or Musical TV series.
(Although we’re sure we’re not the only ones questioning why The Bear is in that category over Drama!)
With that, awards season is well and truly underway! Nominations for the BAFTAs and Oscars are due to be announced soon and it’s likely there’ll be even more awards heading Oppenheimer and Poor Things’ way.
