It's hard to believe that Clueless turns 20 years old tomorrow. It was one of the most popular chick flicks for us growing up and started the trend for the 'Mean Girls' type movies which followed. It made us all want to be part of the typical American high school life with the jocks and cheerleaders. It also had influences in fashion in the 90's with plaid skirts, knee-high socks and fluffy pens.
But while you probably remember the storyline and the central characters, there are some things which you might be surprised to learn about Clueless.
Sarah Michelle Gellar almost got cast as Cher, but it interfered with her appearance on 'All My Children'. Another person linked to the role was Reese Witherspoon.
Clueless is one of the only films based on a high school that most of the actors played characters their own age. Alicia Silverstone and Brittany Murphy were both 18. It's rare in Hollywood that actors play their own age, for instance in the movie Grease, Stockard Channing, who played Rizo, was 34 at the time of filming, playing an 18 year old.
Donald Faison, who played Murray, has his head shaved in one scene and the producers made sure that they only shaved the top of his head so that he wouldn't be completely bald for other scenes they needed to film. That's why he wears a hat for most of the movie.
Brittany Murphy's most famous line in the movie was, "You're a virgin that can't drive" and the ironic part was that she was in fact a virgin who couldn't drive.
The director, Amy Heckerling, attended classes in the school where this movie was filmed, Beverly Hills High, to get a feel for what it was like to go there and to inspire the script. She also made a cameo in the movie as Mrs Geist's bridesmaid.
The scene where Brittany's character is hit on the head by a clog is actually edited. They thought that a real clog hitting her head looked fake so they edited in a clog in the post-production.
The film was shot in just 40 days, which is half the amount of an average filming time for a movie in Hollywood.
