Cillian O’Connor is in danger of missing the All-Ireland Football final after suffering a recurrence of a shoulder injury in Mayo’s 1-16 to 13 points win over Tyrone. The two-time Young Footballer of the Year was forced off after just 10 minutes following a challenge from Tyrone’s Conor Gormley. O’Connor, who was replaced by Enda Varley, was immediately taken to hospital where he underwent preliminary scans on the same left shoulder that he injured in a club game at the end of May. Mayo county board confirmed in a statement that the 21-year-old suffered a “suspected dislocated collarbone”.
The statement read: “During today’s All Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi-Final against Tyrone in Croke Park, Cillian O’Connor suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder on the same shoulder injured last year. Cillian was removed to the Mater Hospital immediately and treated by the specialists.
“Cillian will be closely monitored by the Mayo Senior Football Team Medical Staff over the coming days. We all wish Cillian the very best and a speedy recovery and hopefully we will see Cillian back wearing the Mayo jersey again before too long.”
If O’Connor who scored 6-7 against London and Donegal – is ruled out of the September 22 decider against either Dublin or Kerry, it will be a huge blow to Mayo’s chances of ending a 62-year wait for the Sam Maguire.
