The man killed after a string of disturbances in west Dublin overnight suffered serious injuries in a suspected hit-and-run, gardaí say.

More details have been emerging about what happened late last night in a housing estate in Tallaght in the hours before his death.

A man in his early thirties has been arrested and forensic inquiries have been continuing at the scene throughout this afternoon.

Officers were called out to reports of shots being fired at a home off the Tymon Road North shortly before midnight.

At that point, nobody had been hurt -- but later on in the night there was another disturbance at the same house.

That's when a man in his fifties was hit by a van -- and detectives investigating what happened say it left the scene.

The man was seriously injured, and died at Tallaght Hospital in the early hours of this morning.

The van turned up a short distance away in the Tymonville estate, and the man in his thirties was arrested nearby.

He's being held at Tallaght Garda Station, and detectives there are asking for anyone with footage taken in the area last night -- or who saw suspicious activity -- to make themselves known.

Local councillor Mick Duff says there's "a sense of palpable shock" among neighbours there today.

"I've just driven up by the scene and people are standing at their doors, there are people out looking over their back walls because the area is still cordoned off."

"It's not what you want to see at any time -- an appalling, appalling situation."
