A man awaiting sentence for the coercive control and intimidation of his ex-girlfriend has today pleaded guilty to an attempt to perverse the course of justice.

The man, who was also convicted of multiple assault charges, called her before his trial in an effort to get her to withdraw her complaints.

The man, who can’t be named to protect his ex-girlfriend’s identity, was found guilty yesterday of abusing his former partner, both physically and emotionally, for the best part of two years.

Violence

In her evidence, which was given via video link, she described multiple acts of violence, including one where he broke her arm after stamping on it. He also stamped on her head and dragged her across the floor by her hair.

She described him as very controlling. He used to answer her mobile phone and left her isolated from family and friends. He also controlled her finances and would only give her €5 of her own money every week.

Throughout their relationship, she said she spent periods in Women’s Aid shelters. Gardaí got involved after hospital staff became concerned for her safety when she was treated for her broken arm.

Threats

Today, the man admitted calling her in the lead up to the trial to try and persuade her to withdraw her statements. During his trial, she told the jury he threatened to share naked photos and videos of her online if she didn’t.

His sentence hearing is due to take place in January.
