Transport workers are putting up with 'higher-than-ever' levels of abuse and anti-social behaviour according to a new survey.
More than 600 transport staff, including Luas, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail workers, took part in the SIPTU study. 83 per cent said abuse and anti-social behaviour was an issue at work.
73 per cent of Luas workers said abuse was a daily occurrence for them.
More than one in ten Dublin Bus and Go Ahead staff surveyed said they have experience physical abuse. While Irish Rail staff said verbal abuse was the biggest issue for them.
The majority of transport workers who said they have been abused at work said they believed the problem has got worse in the last 12 months.
SIPTU says it's time for dedicated transport police to be introduced, along with a transport charter outlining what's unacceptable behaviour towards staff.
The union's Adrian Kane says the union's launching a campaign to encourage change;
"Over 50 per cent of people experience antisocial behaviour either on a daily or weekly basis and again the vast majority of workers believe the situation has got worse in the last 12 months and over a third of workers see it as a serious issue."
