Madigan Accused of "Huge Nimbyism" Over Methadone Clinic Letter

Minister Josepha Madigan has come under fire after her constituents received a letter confirming that a methadone clinic won't be located in their area.

The Fine Gael TD and culture minister has distanced herself from the letter saying that she hadn't approved the wording before it was sent out to residents in Ballinteer.

Three years ago she faced criticism over another constituency letter saying a halting site in Carrickmines would have been a waste of valuable land.

She stood by the leaflet -- amid accusations of nimbyism.

Dr Gareth McGovern, Medical Director of the Priority Medical Clinic, has said the same this time.

"The part that upset me somewhat was that was rejoicing that she had blocked it happening," he said.

"It's huge nimbyism, isn't it, this is always the case."

It follows the refusal of a plan to set up a safe injection facility for people addicted to heroin at Merchant's Quay in the south inner city -- a centre Madigan's cabinet colleague
