Di Canio revealed after the game that he had goaded Martin Atkinson into sending him off after the Makems were denied a goal in the second half.
Jozy Altidore had the ball in the net but Atkinson decided not to give Sunderland the advantage and instead awarded a free for a foul on the striker.
