Dublin city councillors have been told cars would have to be banned from Dublin's quays to allow for a temporary cycle track.
Long running plans to create a segregated route for cyclists, along either side of the River Liffey, have been on the cards for several years. However they are yet to get off the ground.
The 5km route is proposed to run from the Tom Clarke or East Link bridge in the Docklands to Heuston Station.
The earliest it could be completed is 2024, prompting calls for it to be trialed in the meantime.
However the city council's Brendan O'Brien told last night's monthly council meeting that it would mean a ban on cars along the quays.
Labour councillor Marie Sherlock admitted there are challenges to introducing a temporary track;
"But I think certainly it was very clear in the chamber last night that there is a very widespread sense of frustration at the delay in implementing the cycle route and a very clear call to put a trial in place."
A report on the proposal is to be made available for next month's council meeting.
