The long talked about Liffey Cycle route has been given the go ahead to be trialed along Dublin's quays.
It will be introduced in phases from the Phoenix Park to the Custom House later this year after city councillors approved the plan at a meeting last night.
Segregated cycle-ways will be put in place along most of the route however in some sections there isn't enough space.
Bollards will be used to keep cyclists separate but the city manager last night stressed the plan will not interfere with footpaths and bus lanes.
However along some sections there is not enough room. In these areas bus and cycle lanes will be made 24/7.
The project is expected to cost €800,000.
Green party councillor, Janet Horner, says its a welcome move;
"We have talked about cycling and we've talked about improving it for about ten years. I think its fantastic that we are looking at a project coming in the matter of months now rather than in the matter of years and decades."
