140 characters. It took us a long time to get good at saying what we wanted to say in that space.
But then came links, photos, and even GIFs and polls. And they ate into those 140 characters.
Soon, Twitter is going to stop counting links, photos, polls, quote tweets, @names, and GIFs as part of its character limit.
The tweaks are designed to give users more room to say what they want. The company will also allow you to mention up to 50 people in a tweet.
And you know the way you have to put a fullstop before someone's name if you want to start a tweet their handle, and also want to make sure everyone sees it? Well, you won't have to do that anymore. It's ditching the “.@” syntax when you want to start a tweet with someone’s username.
For the egomaniacs among us, Twitter is adding the retweet button to your own tweets, so you can give them another run out if you fancy.
Earlier this year, Twitter was rumored to be looking at expanding its character limit to the 10,000 mark. That was decided against, with company CEO Jack Dorsey explaining the 140 limit "allows for of-the-moment brevity.”
In the coming months, we're introducing new ways for you to express even more with a Tweet: https://t.co/l1sWRvXWqr pic.twitter.com/zzhWpRcABs
