A High Court judge has refused to grant bail to a barrister accused of murdering a man on his farm in Dublin last month.

53-year-old Diarmuid Phelan has been in custody since he was arrested and charged with the murder of Keith Conlon at Hazelgrove Farm in Tallaght.

After hearing garda concerns about him being a flight-risk if granted bail, Diarmuid Phelan assured the judge he wouldn’t flee if she approved his application.

He told Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy he had no intention of leaving the jurisdiction because he wanted to meet the charge and clear his name.

He’s accused of murdering Keith Conlon by shooting him in the back of the head with a legally held revolver following an altercation on his farm on February 22nd.

Following his arrest, Mr Phelan told gardai he fired into the air and was “stunned” when one of three men on his land fell to the ground.

In ruling against him today, Ms Justice Murphy agreed he had the means to evade justice and said, “people who find themselves in desperate situations will always be tempted to evade the consequences of that situation.”

Mr Phelan can appeal today’s decision if he so wishes.
